Common Verbs: Ser & Estar

The two verbs for "to be" — when to use each, present-tense conjugation, and practice.

Two verbs for "to be"

English has one verb "to be". Spanish has two: ser and estar. Choosing the wrong one can change the meaning of a sentence entirely. This is one of the first hurdles English speakers face, but the rules are logical once you understand them.

Ser - present tense conjugation

eresyou are (informal)
él / ella / ustedeshe / she is / you are (formal)
nosotros/assomoswe are
vosotros/assoisyou all are (informal, Spain)

The key distinction: permanent vs. temporary
