Two verbs for "to be"
English has one verb "to be". Spanish has two: ser and estar. Choosing the wrong one can change the meaning of a sentence entirely. This is one of the first hurdles English speakers face, but the rules are logical once you understand them.
Ser - present tense conjugation
| Person | Spanish | English |
|---|---|---|
| yo | soy | I am |
| tú | eres | you are (informal) |
| él / ella / usted | es | he / she is / you are (formal) |
| nosotros/as | somos | we are |
| vosotros/as | sois | you all are (informal, Spain) |
| ellos / ellas / ustedes | son | they are / you all are |
Estar - present tense conjugation
| Person | Spanish | English |
|---|---|---|
| yo | estoy | I am |
| tú | estás | you are (informal) |
| él / ella / usted | está | he / she is / you are (formal) |
| nosotros/as | estamos | we are |
| vosotros/as | estáis | you all are (informal, Spain) |
| ellos / ellas / ustedes | están | they are / you all are |

When to use estar

| L | Location | Madrid está en España. - Madrid is in Spain. |

The key distinction: permanent vs. temporary
The simplest rule of thumb: ser is for things that are essentially permanent or defining. Estar is for things that are temporary, changeable, or about location. But be careful - it's not always about actual permanence, but about how the speaker frames the information.
Adjectives that change meaning
