The Preterite Tense (Irregular)

High-frequency irregular preterites: ir/ser, hacer, tener, estar, poder, and more.

Why so many irregulars?

Unfortunately, many of the most frequently used Spanish verbs have irregular preterite forms. The good news is that several share the same set of endings, so once you learn the pattern, you can apply it to multiple verbs at once.

Ir (to go) and Ser (to be)

These two verbs have identical preterite forms. Context makes the meaning clear:

  • Fui al cine ayer. - I went to the cinema yesterday. (ir)
  • Fue un dia increible. - It was an incredible day. (ser)
  • Fuimos a la playa. - We went to the beach. (ir)
  • Fueron muy amables. - They were very kind. (ser)

The "pretzel" group - irregular stems with shared endings

These verbs share a special set of endings: -e, -iste, -o, -imos, -isteis, -ieron. Notice there are no accent marks on these endings - unlike regular preterites.

Hay → Hubo

The impersonal hay (there is/are) becomes hubo in the preterite (there was/were):

  • Hubo un accidente en la carretera. - There was an accident on the road.
  • Hubo muchos problemas. - There were many problems.

Dialogue: a weekend trip

  • Dar and ver take -er/-ir endings with no accents.
  • Hay becomes hubo in the preterite.
